Melodica designer, builder and collector

Oscar Xavier Verdugo

Melodica Collector

Since a young age, Oscar Verdugo has always been fascinated by the Melodica, purchasing his first one in 1968 as a pitch finder during his voice lesson. It would not be for another ten years before he would start using his Melodica professionally, playing in bands and creating music with this unique sounding instrument. By then, Oscar's passion for Melodica began to increase, and his interest in growing a collection has since become a lifelong pursuit. Today, Oscar has over 300 melodicas in his ever-growing collection and actively searches for that one Melodica he has yet to own. Join Oscar on his journey as he continuously adds more melodica treasures to his vast and extraordinary collection.

Melodica Designer and Builder

During his time collecting and playing his melodicas, Oscar Verdugo found that the melodicas he had purchased would not perform in the way he needed them. Oscar continually searched online and purchased melodicas from various countries in the hopes of finding the Melodica that would fit his needs. After several years of extensive online research, he found it would be best to build a custom melodica so that the instrument could perform in the way he wanted. Knowing this project would take a considerable amount of time and knowledge of how the instrument worked, Oscar immediately began to use any spare moment he had for the next several years into the research, studying, planning, and designing. After his design was complete, Oscar used his background as a master woodworker from his early years to create and see his dream come to life. After two years in the making, Oscar completed his one-of-a-kind melodica in 2016. Since then, Oscar continued to create unique melodicas, all of which can be viewed in the museum's collection. The Monsters of Melodica

During his time collecting melodicas, Mr. Verdugo wanted to share his love for jazz music he had performed during his time as a musician as well as the melodica and the best way he could do this was to create a group to perform and record his favorite jazz tunes with the use of his Melodicas. He created The Monsters of Melodica, a group of Melodica lovers that would rehearse jazz classic and then record and produce videos of these classics. With several Melodica players that would eventually become part of The Monsters of Melodica throughout the years. Unfortunately, during the past two years we have been going through Covid Pandemic, no new work was rehearsed and recorded. He has been fortunate to have created an awesome fan base that encourages him to continue his recording and is currently working on new material to be released this year. Many of these recording and videos can be found on You Tube by simply searching for “The Monsters of Melodica”

World Session

During his years recording the melodica, Mr. Verdugo wanted to share his experience with other liked mind melodica players in hope the love for his beloved instrument would grow and others would enjoy the same as he has. Mr. Verdugo decided to offer other melodica players an opportunity to join the Monsters of Melodica on their recording and videos by submitting their performance via the internet and if their performance was selected, they would become featured soloist. The Monsters of Melodica called this “The Monsters of Melodica World Session” as there were performers from all around the world that would join and send submissions. Melodica players are encouraged to submit a solo or if they just wanted to play along, they are provided with the sheet music with the parts needed on the recording. If their submission was approved, they would appear on the recording and video. These videos can be found on You Tube by Simply searching “The Monsters of Melodica World Session” The next session will be announced in October on several online Melodica Websites and the Monsters of Melodica Facebook page and the Melodicaholic’s Anonymous Group Page on Face Book as well.
